January 28, 2013

Jessie & Sheldon's second son has arrived! Corbin Reece Sharp, Clayton's little brother, made his debut on Friday January 25, 2013 at 1:27 pm, weighing in at 4lb 11oz and 19in in length.

Although six and a half weeks early he and Mom are doing fine. He will remain in the Neonatal Unit for an undetermined amount of time until he develops enough to go home with Mommy, Daddy and little Brother.

We can't tell you how much the prayers and support of God's people means to us. We simply say a heartfelt "Thank You" to all! We love you!

NOTE: As you can see on our schedule, we have intentionally reserved some time for the new baby and the adjustments involved for Jessie & Sheldon.

Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor– and whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me to recommend to the People of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness. (Opening quote from the Thanksgiving Proclamation signed by George Washington, President of the United States of America, October 3, 1789)

We are very concerned about the state of our nation and we realize that our only hope is in God.

Please take a moment to read this inspiring encouragement from Paul Heil of "The Gospel Greats" radio program -

Paul's Epistle...
"Your Influence"

Do you believe God has placed you here to influence the world around you?

You should. Christ said Christians are to be "the salt of the earth"
and "the light of the world." So we should let our lights "so
shine among men..." (Matt. 5:13-16.) That means we are to exert whatever
Christian influence we have - for good - on the world around us.

Why, then, do so many Christians overlook - or simply ignore - one of the most
fundamental opportunities we have in our country to affect society at large (of
which we are a part)?

I'm referring, of course, to voting.

Should you and I, as Christians, vote in the November 6th elections?

I don't think we have any choice in the matter. Yes, of course, we should. In

fact, we must. And I think it pleases God when we do exercise this duty that I
believe is literally God-given.

"Paul, isn't that a bit overstated?"

No, I don't think so. Rev. Edward G. Palmer, a noted author and biblical
scholar, put it this way: "Christians have a duty to vote in each
election. That duty includes voting for God's interests and
not voting
against them.
It is clear in Matthew 6:33 that we are to 'Seek first the
kingdom of God and His righteousness.'" In this presidential election the
difference between pro-God and anti-God policies is more stark (and should be
more obvious) than ever, as is clearly reflected in the
two party platforms.

"There is no question that Christians should vote," says Rev. Billy
Graham. "The very fact that there is moral ambiguity in politics indicates
the need for Christians to participate in the elective process. Every nation
stands in need of moral and righteous leadership. Proverbs 14:34 says,
'Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.' In
addition, the New Testament indicates that we have a responsibility to
government since God has established governing authorities for our good (Romans

Simply not voting is a cop-out, not an option. "Christians who boycott voting," says Russell D. Moore, dean of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, are "more akin to Pontius Pilate washing his hands rather than John the Baptist taking on the powers-that-be..." One of the two major presidential candidates will be the next President.
"None of the above" is not on the ballot.

Never have I seen the spiritual forces of evil and their human minions fighting
so hard, so broadly, so viciously against candidates who have taken moral,
Godly stands. But that shouldn't be surprising. The Apostle Paul says that we
as Christians are a "a fearful smell of death and doom" to those who
don't know Christ. (2 Cor. 2:16 LB). They're terrified. They're nauseated. They
can't stand the things of God. And, therefore, they can't tolerate candidates
whose stands, taken on the whole, are pro-family, pro-life, pro-traditional
marriage and, especially, pro-God. As you know, one party didn't even deign to
mention God in their original platform this year and
booed when a reference was
finally included, despite a vote to the contrary, merely for political
expediency. Such people know only secular political power. They know nothing of
God's power or His righteousness.

And this is very important:
Be sure to pray earnestly regarding this election. The Presidential Prayer Team has these recommendations:

Pray for your choices and ask God to lead you as you vote.

Pray that integrity and honesty will prevail in the voting process.

Pray for the protection and accurate counting of every ballot, including absentee and military ballots (although the current administration has been attempting to suppress the latter).

Pray that those who believe in prayer will turn out at the polls to ensure their Christian values are voiced and protected.

18th century British statesmen Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." And that applies well to voting.

Christians comprise a huge potential voting block - powerful enough to ensure
the election of leaders who would enact legislation based on Christian principles.

But it is as a precious gift left unopened, an opportunity quandered, if we don't actually vote.

Think about this. One day you will stand before God.
Everyone will. What if He were to say to you, "I had a candidate for you who would have been able to help end the horrible sin of abortion, yet you stayed home from the polls. I had a candidate who would stand for marriage as I ordained it -- between a man and a woman, but you didn't bother to vote for him. I had a candidate who would curb the unending government assault on Christian values
and beliefs, but you didn't think it was important enough to affirm him with
your vote. Would you explain that to Me, when I gave you the opportunity to
vote and help make a difference?"

I assure you, I don't want to hear such a question.

God sovereignly chooses, for reasons only He fully understands, to rely on His
people -- we who are Christians -- to effect His will in such crucial matters.
And the method He has provided, as imperfect as it may seem at times, is
voting. As the old song says, "We are His hands..."

Make no mistake, this election will be determined by Christians -- those who vote

... and those who don't.

Update On Sandy

March 25, 2012

Sandy went for what she thought would be her last doctor's appointment with the bone surgeon. X-rays showed that there is a "crack" in the bone that is not healing so doctor prescribed vitamin D along with a machine that manipulates bone growth. In a few months if the bone is still not healed, the doctor will become more aggresive and the rod in her leg may need to be replaced. Please keep her in your prayers that if it's God's will, her leg will heal and she won't have to have more surgery! God is great and life is good!

Doug and Sandy were blessed to cruise on our fifth "Singing at Sea" a few weeks ago.  If you've never been, we recommend that you do.  The gospel is shared in so many ways:  the best singing in the world, preaching by "called" men of God, and fellowshiping with folks all over the United States that share in your love for the Lord.

March 2012

After several surgeries this year, Kala will finally get her four top teeth on March 26.  God has been with her through each surgery and she has been a real trooper through it all.  Please keep her in your prayers as she goes through this next phase that God will guide the surgeon and be with Kala through the healing process.

Kala went to the plastic surgeon this week and was told she will have to have another nose surgery where she has a deviated septum. She will also need surgery on her cheek where it's sunken in and on her left eye where it's shaped differently than her right eye. Additionally, they want to do laser surgery on her scars. They are now waiting for insurance to approve so she asks that we all pray that will happen so she can get this behind her! Thank you all so much!!

Howard Hayes of The Hayes Family, a wonderful family gospel group from Boone, NC, finished his race here on earth and has crossed Jordan to his final destination - Heaven!!

Howard was the father of three children, Mylon, Janet, Sharon and the husband of Lucy, so please remember each family member in prayer as they get through the next few days and weeks.

Lord, we thank you for the years you allowed Howard to serve You and the witness and encourager he was to so many of us.  We will miss Howard while we are still here but it won't be long till we'll be going home too!  Thank You, Lord for the promises you made to us and the hope we have in You!

Arrangements for Howard's homegoing celebration can be found at the following link  -  www.hamptonfuneralnc.com

Kala has now had the first of three surgeries and this is what she is saying --

"doing pretty good.. still in a lot of pain. pain meds aren't the best:( one surgery down.. only two to go, then some permanent teeth! whew!(: "

Please pray that the pain will diminish and that God will give her the strength she needs to get through all of this!!

Friday, August 12, 2011

I went and saw the plastic surgeon yesterday. going to have to have another nose surgery in a couple of months.  I'll have to wait about a year before we can do anything about the scars (hopefully they'll fade on their own), my jaw and head is healing up good! (: two months ago today was the wreck!)

Monday, August 08, 2011

A few weeks ago I told my brother-in-law, Jay Humphreys, that I would pray and commit his daughter Cara to the Lord - just as I did for my two nieces, Kala and Marley.  I also told him I would be anticipating the call that she has surrendered her heart to the Lord!!

This past Saturday while we were singing I shared with the congregation my concern (without providing the name) and requested they help me pray for her.  When we checked our messages after the service, Cara had left a message on our phones that she had rededicated her life to the Lord and wanted to thank us for our concern and our prayers!  Wow!!  God knows our hearts and I'm sure there were many Christians praying for her just as we were.  God hears the prayers of His children!

On Sunday evening Cara was in the service with us and honestly this is not the same teenager she was the last time I saw her.  There is an appearance about her and an entirely different attitude that is positive and eager to grow spiritually.

As the song goes: He made a change in the way that I'm talking and walking, old things pass away, behold everything's new. He made a change in the life that I'm living, I'm born again, set free, finally forgiven. If He can make a change in me, He can make a change in you!!!

Tuesday, August 02, 2011

Kala and Marley were both baptized on Sunday morning, July 31with lots of family and friends there.  In fact there was a group of teenagers from Joes Run Memorial Church that came to be there for them - they are all truly blessed!!

Please continue to pray for Kala as the doctor has now determined she has curvature of the spine and her blood count is still a concern.  This family needs your prayers as they grow in their spiritual walk with the Lord.  God bless you all!

Sunday, July 17, 2011

The following is from Kala's father (and my brother) Randy:

Kala went to her physician Friday with a nagging backache. It looks as if her blood is still weak, and low, and she may have a compressed vertabrae. We continue to wait for the end of August when it is expected that the first of several surgeries will take place with her teeth and bones. She still has swelling of the face that shows on her left side where the most of the fractures are. We appreciate your prayers and thoughts, and thank God that we have such a multitude of prayer partners and friends.

This family has been through so much in the past year and the best thing that could ever happen to them is that they have now been saved and are attending church on a regular basis.  As you know, christians are not exempt from the problems of this world and they have more than normal so I ask that you continue to pray for Kala's healing and for God's divine guidance in all the other areas of their lives.

May God bless each of you and we love you-- Sandy

Thank you all for your prayers for Kala.  This is a picture of her after her visit to the oral surgeon and the following is a note from her:

"I have teeth!  appointment at oral surgeon went good! I'm going to have my wisdom teeth cut out along with all the other mouth surgeries, they'll perform a bone graft and take bone out of my jaw and then place it where my front teeth should be. 5-8 weeks later they'll put metal seats in my gums & in another 5-8 weeks I should have some permanent implants! It'll be a long process but worth it in the end! "

God is so good!!

Thursday, July 07, 2011

It has been 25 days since the accident that I thought would take months and multiple surgeries to make Kala look human again.  Well, God makes a way when I don't see a way and the following is a post Kala wrote on July 7 --

"got the rest of my stitches removed today! nose & cheek is healing up good! :) appointment with the oral surgeon at 7:15 in the morning & following that I go get my temporary bridge at the dentist! YES! I'll have teeth! ♥ after 25 days without them! had a wonderful evening at church! love my friends & family"

Only God could perform this miracle, both physically and spiritually.  I ask that you keep Kala, Marley and their father/my brother Randy in your prayers as they continue to grow spiritually!!  Thank you and God Bless You

Monday, June 27, 2011

Well, just finished singing at RIVERFEST last night. We had a great time! So good to see so many of our friends and singing buddys again. We are "So Blessed", and God is so good!

As you can see by our schedule, we are taking the month of July off again this year for some time to vacation and catch up with the other aspects of our lives. (God's word directs us to "Do all things in moderation").

Greenbrier Camp - "Humphreys Retreat"

Sheldon, Jessie & Clayton plan to spend some time at our camp with some friends and of course Sandy and I will be going up for some maintenance at least one weekend as well.

Please keep us in your prayers and try to come and be with us on at least one of the upcoming dates during the remainder of the year.

Love & prayers,
